More on "Social Media Marketing Workbook"

As promised, I continued reading “Social Media Marketing Workbook” by Jason McDonald this week and am back to report back to you on Chapter 2, Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. After Chapter 1, each chapter is now focused on optimizing one specific social media platform. Chapter 2 focuses on Facebook, Chapter 3 on LinkedIn and Chapter 4 on Twitter. Each goes into depth about how the platform works, what it’s about, and how to use it to successfully market your brand. Even though I’m an avid social media user, I learned a substantial amount of new information regarding these platforms and how to use them. Listed below are the top five things I thought to be the most useful from each chapter.

Chapter 2: Facebook

1.       Focused on fun

2.       Individual users have profiles that can “friend” other profiles whereas companies have pages that can be “liked” by profiles

3.       Balancing fun and “buy my stuff” posts is vital to improving interaction and overall Edgerank

4.       You can advertise and target specific demographics

5.       Monitor engagement with “Insights” and what led people to your page with Google Analytics

Chapter 3: LinkedIn

1.       Focused on usefulness

2.       “Schmoozing” is essential to gaining connections and building your network

3.       Without LinkedIn Premium, you can only directly contact your “1st level” connections unless you get an introduction from one of them to a “2nd level” connection

4.       “Employee team-first” platform

5.       More oriented towards business-to-business connection than individual-to-business connection

Chapter 4: Twitter

1.       Focused on news

2.       Tweets are essentially “microblogs”

3.       Can be a very effective way to market, or not

4.       You can converse with anyone on Twitter regardless of connection

5.       Very noisy so make sure you stay focused on your customers

I found the chapters on Facebook and LinkedIn highly interesting because I don’t use those two platforms frequently, therefore I didn’t know much about their capabilities prior to reading. Contrastingly, I am very familiar with Twitter but I still learned some new and useful tips. Next week I’ll be finishing the book so keep an eye out for my final post on “Social Media Marketing Workbook.”

See you next post,
Casey
